Immich 1.129 Photo and Video Backup Solution Released

Immich 1.129 fixes memory issues, adds video playback in memories and introduces shortcuts and QR codes for easier sharing.

Immich, an open-source self-hosted photo and video backup solution, has just released version 1.129, addressing several issues from the previous versions while also introducing some new features.

The main highlight is that videos in memories are now playable on the web, letting users relive special moments without leaving their browser. Additionally, the new shortcuts (L and Shift+L) to add assets to an album or shared album will undoubtedly streamline your workflow.

On the iOS front, Immich no longer pauses any background music when you open the app, making for a more seamless experience. Last but certainly not least, the shared link now features a handy QR code to pass along your favorite pictures and videos easily.

On top of that, the recent transition to a new memories system introduced bugs that led to user frustration. However, Immich has taken thorough steps to address these hiccups. A critical migration within this release will:

  • Automatically run the memory generation job
  • Delete all previous memories
  • Reset the memory generation status field

At the same time, adjusting or editing memories to add or remove assets is on the horizon, and sharing memories via a dedicated link—much like sharing albums—is likely coming soon, too. In addition, the developers plan to implement location-based memories or those centered on specific events or date ranges.

Lastly, something important. Earlier versions of Immich took a new approach to memories by shifting from a simple “on-the-fly” database query to a nightly background job. This job generates memories for upcoming dates and relies on a metadata table to track which days have already been covered.

By default, any memory not marked as a favorite is automatically deleted after 30 days. If needed, this cleanup process can be run manually from the admin dashboard. Unfortunately, two bugs created confusion during the rollout of memories in recent versions:

  1. An “off by one bug” caused memories to be generated twice for the same day.
  2. The “years ago” calculation glitch led to incorrect time references, especially for future or non-today dates.

Although Immich 1.128 addressed both these issues, many users are still stuck with already-generated broken memories. To fix this once and for all, v1.129 effectively resets everything back to zero, allowing the app to rebuild memories properly and avoid further duplication or miscalculations.
