PhotoPrism AI-Powered Photos App Adds PostgreSQL Support, MCP Integration

PhotoPrism's latest release introduces experimental PostgreSQL support, MCP integration for AI assistants, OAuth authentication, and a new Export dialog.

PhotoPrism, the open-source, self-hosted photo management application, released its October 2026 update, introducing experimental PostgreSQL support. The update also upgrades the GORM database library from version 1.9.16 to 1.31.2 and adds a new database transfer command to assist migrations.

Another major addition is MCP integration, allowing AI assistants and other compatible applications to search and browse PhotoPrism libraries while respecting existing account permissions. The new MCP tools also provide lookups for commands, supported file formats, metadata, and thumbnail sizes.

To support these integrations, PhotoPrism now includes OAuth authentication for connecting external applications and remote MCP clients. MCP is enabled by default for eligible users, but administrators can disable it for individual accounts or globally through configuration settings.

For everyday photo management, the release introduces a new Export dialog in the photo viewer. Users can choose specific image sizes and formats when downloading photos, making it easier to export originals, previews, or resized copies directly from the application.

The Places section also gets several improvements. The default world map now uses updated OpenStreetMap data. The 3D Earth view now includes a starry background and atmospheric effects. Additionally, the developers fixed an issue with zooming in the location dialog when animations are disabled.

Several metadata-related bugs have been addressed, including incorrect time zones for locations at sea in the Pacific, date adjustments when switching to or from UTC, and inconsistent focal length information across Exif, ExifTool JSON, and XMP metadata.

Other fixes cover face selection overlays that failed to follow zoom changes during editing, database deadlocks when updating labels, and problems with the photoprism dl command when downloading YouTube videos.

On the security side, PhotoPrism updates libheif to version 1.23.7, addressing 23 GitHub Security Advisories, and Go to version 1.27.3, incorporating fixes for 11 CVEs. ONNX Runtime has also been upgraded to version 1.31.0, with its telemetry now disabled before library initialization.

Additional changes include Vulkan GPU drivers in the AMD and Intel Docker initialization targets, an updated default OpenAI model, and a restriction requiring newly created usernames to contain only standard ASCII characters.

Finally, users planning to upgrade should note that files and directories containing unsupported characters in their names will be skipped during indexing, importing, and synchronization.

For more information, see the changelog. The developers recommend using the project’s Docker images for deployments on private servers or NAS devices and backing up the database before upgrading.
