COSMIC Desktop 1.0.16 Improves Bluetooth Pairing and File Handling

COSMIC Desktop 1.0.16 adds Bluetooth keyboard passkey dialogs and improves the Open With dialog in COSMIC Files.

COSMIC Desktop 1.0.16 has been released as the latest update to System76’s Rust-based desktop environment.

On the compositor side, COSMIC Desktop 1.0.16 updates cosmic-comp to a newer calloop version and fixes a bug where XWayland windows using client-side decorations could shrink when events occurred.

The update also includes fixes for cursor capture sessions, resolves an issue where multiple windows could show a focus border, and addresses a possible deadlock related to creating a zbus connection.

COSMIC Files also receives several improvements around the “Open With” dialog. Apps marked as “NoDisplay” are now hidden, other applications are sorted more cleanly, and applications without declared MIME type support are no longer shown where they do not belong.

Additionally, the file manager now offers faster app icon handling and takes added file associations into account.

Another fix lands inside COSMIC Launcher, where Alt-Tab behavior has been corrected. The launcher also now recreates a dummy layer surface when closed to keep clipboard handling connected.

COSMIC Panel receives a small refinement with smoother autohide behavior, while COSMIC Player fixes seek direction handling, forward seeking limits, and frameskip playhead behavior.

Inside COSMIC Settings, the update adds passkey and PIN display dialogs for Bluetooth keyboard pairing. It also adds OpenRC support for Bluetooth service management, which matters for distributions that use OpenRC instead of systemd.

Another notable Linux desktop fix is in xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic, where COSMIC Desktop 1.0.16 fixes file picker issues affecting NVIDIA systems. Rounding out the update, cosmic-app-library fixes an icon size mismatch, while cosmic-greeter now autofills SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH and SOURCE_GIT_HASH during vendoring.

For additional details, see the changelog.

COSMIC Desktop 1.0.16 packages are expected to arrive in the repositories of rolling-release distros such as Arch, openSUSE Tumbleweed, CachyOS, and others shortly. Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS users already have it available as an update.

Finally, COSMIC Desktop is also set to receive a major visual enhancement soon with the arrival of the Frosted Glass effect. More details are available here.
