The React team has announced the React Foundation, a new governance body that will oversee React and React Native within the Linux Foundation. This transition moves stewardship of the popular JavaScript UI library from single-vendor oversight to a neutral, foundation-based model supported by multiple industry stakeholders.
The React Foundation will manage project governance, infrastructure, and ecosystem coordination. Founding members are Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Vercel, Expo, Callstack, Software Mansion, and Huawei. Meta, which created React in 2013 and has led its development since open-sourcing it, will continue to contribute but will no longer be the sole governing authority.
If you’re not in the web development world, let me quickly clarify that React is among the most widely adopted front-end libraries in modern software development, holding a strategic position in the FOSS ecosystem. While primarily a web technology, it is deeply embedded in open-source development workflows and plays a central role in the JavaScript tooling stack.
Transitioning to the Linux Foundation has several advantages. First, it aligns React with other major open-source projects that have adopted neutral governance for long-term sustainability.
On top of that, foundation stewardship offers formal technical governance, vendor-neutral decision-making, trademark management, and coordinated funding. Daily development of React and React Native will continue, with maintainers and contributors following their regular release cycles.
