KDE Plasma 6.4.6 Desktop Environment Released

KDE Plasma 6.4.6 arrives as the final maintenance update in the stable 6.4 series, featuring key patches for Discover, KWin, and Plasma System Monitor.

Two months after version 6.4.5, the KDE team has rolled out Plasma 6.4.6 — the latest maintenance update in the 6.4 series (initially released in mid-June) for this popular free and open-source desktop environment.

The Discover software center received attention this cycle, with safer shutdown handling and better integration of end-of-session operations outside of Plasma, addressing long-standing issues that affect system restarts and shutdowns from within the Discover interface.

KMenuEdit, the utility for editing application launchers, saw fixes for crashes caused by malformed .desktop entries and sorting issues when dealing with empty selections. The Plasma Addons suite also received updates—Notes now saves text more frequently to prevent data loss, while the Timer applet’s digits now follow the system color scheme for better visibility.

On the visual and system side, KWin, the window manager and compositor, underwent extensive fixes. These include preventing infinite loops in window placement, improving output handling when displays are hot-plugged, fixing color range rendering, and correcting inconsistencies in input method synchronization.

Core KDE libraries also received critical updates. libplasma now correctly processes resize events and uses more efficient animation handling, while libksysguard resolves a crash that occurred when saving user presets. Meanwhile, KDE GTK Config introduces an explicit synchronization call, ensuring GTK applications properly apply Plasma’s visual preferences.

Other fixes include smoother margins in Plasma System Monitor, cleaner handling of wallpaper changes in Plasma Desktop, and several CI-related maintenance updates to align KDE’s continuous integration builds with Qt 6.10.

Smaller but important patches landed in Plasma Workspace, too, which now properly sanitizes images in notifications, prevents crashes during logout and applet reconfiguration, and fixes long-standing issues with clipboard handling from office suites. The Plasma Welcome app enhances icon rendering by enabling mipmapping and switching to vector-based icons for improved visual clarity.

Lastly, xdg-desktop-portal-kde—the component that bridges desktop apps with system features—now allows the compositor to select the correct scaling for screen capture regions, ensuring more reliable screen sharing and recording experiences.
