Kdenlive 25.08 Video Editor Released with Over 300 Fixes

Kdenlive 25.08 open-source video editing software is out with over 300 fixes, smoother UI, better subtitles, and improved rendering.

The Kdenlive team has just released the brand new version, 25.08, as part of the wider KDE Gear 25.08 application bundle, packed with more than 300 commits and fixing over 15 known crashes.

On the UI side, one of the things that immediately captures attention is the redesigned audio mixer, which now offers clearer visuals, refined thresholds, and fixes for HiDPI displays using fractional scaling.

Plus, editors betting on the titler tool can now move and resize SVGs and images more intuitively, use “Shift + Drag” for center resizing, and take advantage of a streamlined “Templates” tab. Several bugs—like incorrect panel sizing, selection glitches, and outdated thumbnails—have also been resolved.

Visual accuracy sees a boost with the updated scopes, which now adopt system palettes for better theme integration, while bugs linked to high zoom levels and certain paint modes have been ironed out.

Subtitles and text-to-speech features were also refined, with fixes addressing crashes, better layer handling, improved resizing for lower resolutions, and compatibility updates for Whisper and Vosk.

For project organization, guides and markers have gone through a major overhaul. Selecting, editing, and syncing them across timelines is now far more consistent, and a new option even lets users display markers for all clips in a project.

This aligns with the upgraded Project Notes, which can now automatically convert timecodes into clickable links and create markers or guides directly from notes.

The monitors used for previewing video clips were not left behind either. Users will see improvements in snapping, overlays, timecode handling, and transform tools, plus a fix to ensure the playhead always stays visible.

On the backend, rendering and encoding got several noteworthy additions. Kdenlive 25.08 brings support for Nvidia 10-bit x265 encoding, introduces 10-bit export profiles, integrates the faster SVT-AV1 codec, and adds practical tools like power management to prevent sleep during long renders.

There’s also better handling of log files, canceling renders, and locale-specific fixes for macOS and Windows. A hardware decoding option has been introduced in the Config Wizard, paving the way for broader GPU acceleration in the future.

Under the hood, memory usage has been reduced in the AI-driven background removal feature (SAM2), packaging has been improved across Linux, macOS, and Windows, and the dependency on Mediainfo has been dropped thanks to direct timecode reading in MLT.

Lastly, platform-specific bugs have also been cleared up, including a long-standing macOS issue where projects couldn’t be opened with a double-click, a Windows crash in the titler’s typewriter effect, and missing fonts in the Ubuntu AppImage.

Refer to the release announcement for detailed information about all changes in Kdenlive 25.08. Source code and pre-built packages are available from the official Kdenlive site.
