VirtualBox, a popular open-source virtualization software, has just released its second maintenance update to the 7.2 series, version 7.2.4, which mainly focuses on improving stability and compatibility across different platforms.
One of the main highlights of this version is initial support for the upcoming Linux kernel 6.18, ensuring that VirtualBox continues to run smoothly on newer Linux distributions. The update also includes specific Guest Additions fixes for RHEL 9.6 and 9.7 kernels, addressing compatibility issues reported by some users.
On the networking side, a NAT-related issue affecting multiple port forwarding rules has been fixed. This should help users relying on complex network setups where VirtualBox’s NAT functionality was previously unreliable.
The release also improves desktop stability. Oracle fixed a VM Manager crash that occurred when the host system resumed from sleep, a bug reported by several users on GitHub.
In addition, language support has been updated for Traditional Chinese, Greek, Swedish, Hungarian, and Indonesian, keeping translations aligned with the latest upstream strings.
For Windows guests, this update also fixes a long-standing issue where the Guest Additions installation could fail on Windows XP SP2, which, while an old system, remains in use in certain legacy environments.
Refer to the changelog for details on all changes in the new version. VirtualBox 7.2.4 is available from the project’s download section on the website. After updating, remember to install the latest Extension Pack version, which enhances VirtualBox’s functionality by adding features.
