PhotoPrism, a widely adopted self-hosted photo management tool, has announced its latest update, packed with enhancements and compatibility features, particularly for iOS 18 users.
Enhanced HEIC Support and iOS Compatibility: First and foremost, the update boasts improved HEIC image support (a file format used to store images, primarily on Apple devices), ensuring seamless compatibility with iOS 18.
User Experience Enhancements: PhotoPrism’s September update also enhances its user interface and overall user experience. Notably, sidecar files will no longer appear in search results when sorting by file size, streamlining the search process.
Additionally, for those who frequently archive photos, the software now displays recently archived pictures first, improving accessibility and organization.
GPS Accuracy and Places Feature: A significant upgrade in this release is the improved GPS location accuracy for photos, which necessitates a complete rescan of usersโ libraries.
This will enhance the ‘Places‘ feature, rectifying an earlier issue where no pictures were found when clicking on clusters, thereby enriching the geographic tagging of photos.
API and Security Improvements: The update also includes crucial API improvements. Fixes have been implemented to address silent failures in update requests due to database errors.
Moreover, the introduction of interactive Swagger developer documentation promises to aid developers with useful examples and better integration capabilities.
Security hasn’t been left behind. An update to Go v1.22.7 bundles several security and bug fixes, ensuring the platform remains secure and reliable.
Translations: To cater to a global audience, PhotoPrism has added Irish (Gaeilge) translations and updated existing Basque, French, and German translations.

Keep in mind that the installation packages released are tailored for experienced users and maintainers of third-party integrations. For a more streamlined installation experience, PhotoPrism recommends using one of their Docker images, which can be run on private servers or NAS devices.
