PhotoPrism AI-Powered Photos App Released Its First 2025 Update

The first PhotoPrism update for 2025 brings a sleek UI, hybrid photo-video viewer, and 3D Earth view for Places—plus some usability and performance enhancements.

Five months after its previous September update, PhotoPrism, a widely adopted self-hosted open-source photo management tool, has just released a major upgrade, introducing a refreshed interface and several under-the-hood enhancements that improve both performance and accessibility.

One of the most eye-catching elements is the new hybrid photo and video viewer, which replaces the previously dedicated video player. By merging these functions into a single tool, PhotoPrism simplifies browsing, regardless of whether users are dealing with still images or video clips.

The interface also features a redesigned edit dialog, now more responsive on mobile devices, making it easier to tweak image details and metadata on the go.

Moreover, PhotoPrism users will be thrilled to explore the new 3D Earth view in the Places section, which allows photographers to visualize their geotagged images in a three-dimensional environment, adding a layer of fun and discovery to photo organization.

Additionally, right-to-left languages now benefit from a long list of layout optimizations, highlighting PhotoPrism’s commitment to an inclusive, global user base.

Behind the scenes, the development team has spent considerable time refining both the interface and system architecture. For example, videos now play automatically during slideshows, while the enhanced card and mosaic views display essential video details—like duration, filename, and camera data—at a glance.

Notably, this release also includes new import configuration options, improved search functionalities, and expanded metadata recognition for film scanners.

Keep in mind that the installation packages released are tailored for experienced users and maintainers of third-party integrations. For a more streamlined installation experience, PhotoPrism recommends using one of their Docker images.
