KDE Gear 24.08 Highlights
This new release encompasses a wide range of applications, from social media managers and storage monitors to terminal emulators and travel assistants, all enhanced with fresh features and improvements.
Dolphin, KDE’s file manager, stands out in this update, making managing files requiring administrative privileges simpler than ever.
New features such as visual cues and wizards streamline the user experience, while a newly introduced “Move to New Folder…” option and a default “Select All” trigger enhance file manipulation efficiency.
Complementing Dolphin, Filelight offers a redesigned interface in its latest iteration, which improves how users visualize disk space usage. Notably, the integration allows users to install Filelight directly from Dolphin, emphasizing ease of use and accessibility.
Konsole, KDE’s terminal emulator, introduces a usability enhancement. Users can bookmark important positions in long outputs with a simple double-click on the scrollbar—ideal for developers and power users who need to track significant data points in their workflow.
In multimedia, KDE Gear 24.08 debuts a keyframe curve editor in Kdenlive, KDE’s video editing software.
This tool allows for more precise effect customization and introduces new easing methods to refine transitions. It also features a revamped effects stack widget for a more intuitive editing experience.
For those attending Akademy 2024, KDE’s travel applications, Itinerary, and Kongress have received updates to make your experience seamless. The Itinerary app now displays detailed seat information directly in your timeline, while Kongress provides indoor maps of the venue, ensuring you never miss out on any event.
NeoChat and Tokodon also receive updates, enhancing user safety and management capabilities within the KDE ecosystem. NeoChat allows users to block invites from unknown contacts, and Tokodon introduces new functionalities for server management and an improved reading and posting experience.
On the development front, Kate, KDE’s advanced text editor, expands its document formatting capabilities and adds support for multiple programming languages, improving its utility for developers across various projects.
Falkon, KDE’s web browser, now allows users to customize privacy settings on a per-site basis, enhancing security and user control over JavaScript execution and other site-specific settings.
