Immich Celebrates 50K Stars on GitHub with v1.120

Immich celebrates 50K GitHub stars with v1.120, which now includes auto-database backups, faster HDR transcoding, and a timeline scroll indicator.

Immich, an open-source, self-hosted photo and video backup solution, has reached an impressive milestone: 50,000 stars on GitHub. To celebrate, the devs released a new v1.120, packed with new features, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. Here they are.

Immich 1.120: Key Features and Enhancements

One of the major features of this release is the built-in mechanism for automatic database backups. This functionality is enabled by default, running daily at 2 AM server time and retaining the last 14 configurable backups.

Users can easily adjust these settings by navigating to “Administration” > “Settings” > “Backup Settings.” The generated database ZIP files are stored at “<UPLOAD_LOCATION>/backups.” At present, database restoration needs to be performed manually, but detailed instructions are available in the documentation for your convenience.

Another novelty is that the timeline view on the web now features a location indicator that displays Month/Year information as you scroll. This subtle enhancement makes navigation much smoother, offering better context about where you are in your library while browsing through content.

On the UI side, Immich’s web interface has been updated to use Svelte 5, improving performance and ensuring a more responsive experience across all devices.

In addition, thanks to a new tone-mapping implementation developed by the Jellyfin team, the performance of transcoding HDR videos to SDR has significantly improved.

According to devs, during testing, transcoding speeds increased by as much as 69% for 4K target resolution, though the precise gains will vary based on your hardware, source video, and transcoding settings.

Lastly, v1.120 addresses a notable bug related to server start-up delays. Users who previously experienced slow start-up times on some systems should now see a significant boost in performance.

The changelog provides detailed information about all the novelties and improvements that Immich 1.120 brings.
