Hyprland, a favorite among fans of tiling window managers, has just released its latest version, 0.44, focusing on bug fixes and adding some new features to improve user experience.
Among the new additions, users can now take advantage of a few handy command arguments. The new --version
argument allows for easy version checks of the Hyprland binary, replacing the need for hyprctl version
.
Similarly, the new --systeminfo
argument makes it easier to access system details. For those looking to customize their setup, there is a new environment variable HYPRLAND_CONFIG
, which provides another way to pass an explicit config aside from the --config
command.
Hyprland 0.44.0 also introduces improvements to the Dwindle layout, including the new movetoroot
layout message and the split_bias
configuration option, enhancing layout flexibility.
Furthermore, auto-grouping for layouts is now configurable, providing users with more control over how their windows are managed.
In terms of layer management, a new layerrule order
has been implemented to facilitate ordering of layers on the same plane. Meanwhile, hyprctl
gains new properties for monitors and workspacerules requests, along with a fresh submap
request.
Additionally, Hyprland no longer overwrites the XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
environment variable, introducing a user-check to maintain its integrity.
One more noteworthy update is implementing the single-pixel-buffer protocol, which should enhance overall graphics handling.
As expected, bug fixes are the highlight of this release, focusing on polishing rough edges and improving stability. Key fixes include:
- Surface Calculations: Multiple fixes have been made to surface UV and positioning calculations, resulting in smoother resizing Chromium windows and other applications.
- Text Input: Improvements for IME users address various text-input issues, providing a smoother typing experience.
- XWayland Handling: Fixed misplacement and incorrect input translation issues when monitors were unplugged and reconnected.
- Drag-and-Drop: Several drag-and-drop edge cases have been resolved, leading to a more consistent user experience.
- Initial Cursor Warping: The initial cursor warping bug has been fixed, which should eliminate unexpected cursor movements.
- General Stability: Numerous underlying codebase cleanups and crash fixes contribute to a more stable Hyprland experience.
